The Lanterns Of Kindness: Spreading Light Through Good Deeds
People spotted the moon signaling Ramadan’s beginning in Wadi Al Noor, where golden sand met the night sky’s silver glow. The smell of hot samosas and sweet dates filled the streets, mixing with kids’ laughter as they rushed home to break their fast. Lanterns lit up on every doorstep throwing warm light across the stone paths.
Ayaan, Zoya, Omar, and Laila loved this time of year the most—a month to show faith, be kind, and learn new things. The previous night had felt special as they had rushed to the roof to look for the new moon, but tricky clouds kept it out of sight. Still, they figured out something valuable by staying calm and believing—having faith means trusting even when you couldn’t see the answer right away. They had no idea their Ramadan journey was just starting. Each day would bring fresh experiences, teachings, and events that would mold them into improved versions of themselves.
A Place Of Peace, Waiting To Shine
On the evening of the second day of Ramadan, children walked to the Masjid-e-Noor, their neighborhood mosque, for evening prayers. The mosque was an oasis of peace, with soft echoes of whispered du’a’s unfurling in the air. Stepping inside, however, something caught their eye, causing them to halt their advancing feet.
“The mosque looks so plain,” Laila whispered, gazing at the bare walls and dimly lit space.
“It feels dark, like it’s missing something,” Omar added, looking around thoughtfully.
Suddenly Zoya got an idea and said, “Why don’t we get light both ways? Let’s decorate the mosque with colorful lanterns!”
Adding Color To A Place Of Peace
The next day, the children gathered at Ayaan’s house, pulling out their favorite Crayola Sets from Hala Toy Station.
They made careful paper cutouts using the shapes of lanterns and painted them using Crayola Watercolor Pencils, like the deep blues in the night sky, golden yellows like those on the moon, and rich greens that reminded one of the palm trees swaying in Wadi Al Noor. The Metallic Colored Pencils completed the task well, adding shine to the lanterns as though they would have real light glowing inside.
Just as everything was going well, Omar made a mistake in the coloring section. “Oh, no. I made a mistake.” “No, you did not. You are using the Crayola Erasable Twistable Colored Pencils, so you can easily erase the mistake,” said Ayaan.
After preparing the lanterns, they transported them to the mosque and strung them along its walls. Before long, the once bare area was aglow in colors, rejoicing in Ramadan. Knowing that they were beautifying their surroundings in the spirit of that holy month gave the children a sense of pride.
A Brighter Mosque, A Warmer Heart
Just as they stepped outside, admiring their work, they saw an elderly woman struggling to carry heavy bags of groceries past the mosque. She walked slowly, her hands trembling under the weight.
Without hesitation, Zoya and others rushed to her. “Let us help you, Aunty,” they said, taking the bags from her hands.
The old woman’s eyes filled with warmth as she looked at them. “You children are like little lanterns yourselves,” she said with a smile.
“Lanterns?” Omar asked curiously.
The woman nodded. “A true lantern is not the one that gives light, but the one who spreads kindness.”
The children exchanged thoughtful glances. They realized the brightest light came from good deeds.
The Light Of Ramdan
That evening, they met again at the same rooftop and watched the stars glimmer in the sky like the little lanterns hung from the ceilings.
“We had started out trying to bring light to the mosque,” said Laila, “but today we have come to realise that kindness is the greatest illumination of all.”
Dadi smiled in pride. “Yes, my dears. Good deeds make light in the world, just like lanterns light the night.”
